Unclaimed money in New Zealand

A name in a search result is a starting point, not proof of entitlement. Before a claim can proceed, you need to establish who owns the money and who has authority to act.

Start with the official search

Inland Revenue lets you search for unclaimed money using a person’s or organisation’s name. You can search its website or myIR. To submit a claim through that search, you will be asked to log in to myIR or create a logon.

You can use this official route yourself. Professional assistance is an option, not a requirement for searching the Inland Revenue database.

Search and claim through Inland Revenue

Prepare evidence of ownership

Inland Revenue asks for information connecting the claimant to the money. Its examples include previous addresses, old account statements and correspondence with the organisation that passed the funds to it.

For a company or organisation

Search using the organisation’s name and gather records that explain its connection to the funds. If you are acting on someone else’s behalf, Inland Revenue requires proof of your authority to do so. Ask the institution holding the funds which documents apply to your particular claim.

For an estate

Inland Revenue lists a will, death certificate, Letter of Administration or other evidence of authority to act for the estate as examples. The information needed depends on the circumstances; do not assume a name match alone is sufficient.

Allow time for the institution’s review

Inland Revenue’s guidance states that it takes at least 12 weeks to process claims and may take longer depending on demand. It recommends supplying as much supporting evidence as possible to avoid delays. This is Inland Revenue’s guidance, not a guaranteed Nexus recovery timeframe.

If Nexus has contacted you

Our research may indicate that a company or estate has a potential entitlement. Receiving a notification does not guarantee a successful claim. We need your authorisation and cooperation before investigating fully or acting on your behalf.

Nexus Asset Recovery is a professional recovery firm, not a government agency. Our process begins with discovery, followed by verification and an agreement, the required filing and, if approved, disbursement of funds.

Our service is offered on a no-win, no-fee basis. The contingency percentage is agreed before work proceeds. Ask for the written agreement and clarification of any terms before deciding.

Keep sensitive information private

Do not send bank account details, passwords, identity documents or card information through this website’s contact form. Use an initial enquiry to discuss the potential claim and the appropriate next step.
